Hares of Hampshire

What is Hares of Hampshire?

The wonderful team at The Murray Parish Trust and Wild In Art created a spectacular public art event that bounded across the great cities of Winchester and Southampton in the summer of 2022.

For ten weeks, Winchester and Southampton streets, parks and public spaces were brought to life with an exhibition of magnificent hares. Each giant sculpture was individually designed and beautifully created, showcasing the wealth of artistic talent the county has to offer – while positively contributing to the economic, cultural and social life of the area.

We are delighted to announce that our Hare, Poly, which was designed by artist Julien Masson raised an additional £7,800 for The Murray Parish Trust at the Grand Auction.

Q: What is your background as an artist?
A: I studied Fine Art in France, Italy and the UK and also work in computer design and 3d Animation in the UK. I am very versatile and I work in many different art techniques, starting with paint on canvas, I also produce sculptures, works in ceramics, all the way to digital print installations, 3d printing and computer animation.
Q: What techniques did you use to create Poly?
A: I used a mix of computer design software’s to create a multifaceted concept for Poly. I then replicated this design on the model of Hare by hand using a more painterly technique, and also using a lot of masking tape!

Q: What was your inspiration behind Poly?
A: As I use a lot of 3D modelling and vector designs in my work it is not surprising that I was inspired by the aesthetic of computer 3D modelling using polygons and vertices to create a 3 dimensional shape. In many of my artworks I included the full spectrum colours as a nod to the rainbow symbol of hope during the pandemic and to say thank you to the NHS. In a subtle way, it also alludes to the LGBT colours.

Q: What drove you to get involved with Hares of Hampshire?
A: I was previously involved with the Go Rhinos and Zany Zebras in Southampton, and I thoroughly enjoyed these projects. Ultimately it is helping raise funds and promote awareness for local charity causes and I feel I can help with that . So when Hampshire Hares project was advertised I knew I just had to apply.

Q: What have you enjoyed about the project?
A: We had a great space at the Marland’s shopping centre, and I really liked working in a Public space. And of course, it was fantastic being able to meet the public and talk to them about my work and the Hampshire Hare project. Everyone has been so appreciative and enthusiastic about it. It has been a good opportunity to meet other like-minded Artists from all around the UK.

Q: Do you have any future projects in the pipeline?
A: Yes, working on a digital commission for an Oxford museum at the moment and I am also working on a couple of community based exhibitions in Southampton trying to reach new audiences that don’t get the opportunity to go to Art galleries.

Q: Where can people find your work?
A: On my website is www.jfmmasson.com you will be able to see the very wide range of artworks I produce, my Social Media : @jfmmasson . I am part of the Keepers Artists group in Southampton (http://thekeepersartists.org.uk) and we are shortly moving into our new Art studios on East street just off the High street. Very excited about that…

Q: How does it make you feel seeing Poly on the trail?
A: I love it, I am so proud to have my work exhibited so close to the cathedral, such a prestigious and historical place. I also absolutely loved seeing my design on the roof of the MINI! For me it is a logical continuation of the Hares project, and I am very flattered to have been asked By Partridge of Hampshire to produce a design for one of their cars.
Q: Would you recommend other artists to get involved in Wild In Art?
A: Absolutely! I would encourage everyone to have a go, Artists and the general public too. Get inspired and get creative!

I want to thank the sponsors Partridge of Hampshire for their support, the Hares of Hampshire team and The Murray Parish Trust for their tireless work to organise and manage such a great project !
